According to reports, Sony’s PlayStation 5 console will be redesigned and feature a 6nm AMD semi-custom processor.
According to DigiTimes, Sony’s manufacturing partner, TSMC, is planning to begin the development of a redesigned console in the second and third quarters of 2022.
The new model is supposed to be less expensive to produce and will use an AMD-designed system-on-chip (SoC) that will be manufactured using TSMC’s N6 (6nm) fabrication technology.
The company’s 6nm processor would reportedly allow for up to 5 layers of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, as well as multi-patterning, faster processing, and potentially higher yields.
The 6nm chip will generate up to 18% more transistor density than the PlayStation’s existing 7nm processor.
The new processor would adhere to the same design standards as its predecessor, allowing SoCs to reuse the same design environment and reduce production costs.
Changes and their Reasons
Following the announcement of record PlayStation financial results, Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki confirmed that the company was looking at a number of ways to help it cope with the global hardware product shortage.
Totoki said Sony had the resources to deal with the semiconductor shortage when asked about it directly.
“For eg, we might be able to find a secondary resource, or we might be able to cope by modifying the design,” he said.
No company has officially announced that it will participate in the overhaul of the console. In order to create a perfect gaming zone for yourself, check out these routers.
