Windows is rumored to be undergoing some major changes.

Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, centered his speech on developer and cloud news, scarcely mentioning Windows 10 updates at all. There was a good reason for it, as it turns out: according to Nadella, Microsoft is going to release more information about “the next generation of Windows” very soon.
“…and soon we will share one of the most significant updates to Windows of the past decade to unlock greater economic opportunity for developers and creators. I’ve been self-hosting it over the past several months, and I’m incredibly excited about the next generation of Windows. Our promise to you is this: we will create more opportunities for every Windows developer today and welcome every creator who is looking for the most innovative, new, and open platform to build and distribute and monetize applications. We look forward to sharing more very soon.”
It’s unclear exactly what “next generation of Windows” means.
Microsoft has delivered a “big” Windows 10 update twice a year for the past few years, including new features and major tweaks. Because Microsoft claimed that Windows 10 would be the “last Windows” owing to its schedule of constant updates, I wouldn’t expect a Windows 11 until something has changed.
Nonetheless, it appears that this so-called next-gen Windows will be bigger than any update we’ve seen since the launch of Windows 10 in 2015. The fact that Microsoft intends to host a separate reveal for the update is telling since it is the kind of thing it loves to talk about at Build.
It’s also worth noting that Nadella referred to it as “the next generation of Windows,” rather than simply “the next update to Windows 10.” But it’s possible that I’m reading too much into it.
Because we’re still coping with the coronavirus, Microsoft may have decided that it’s better to showcase Windows separately from the rest of its developer-related news.
We already know that Microsoft is working on a significant aesthetic refresh dubbed ‘Sun Valley,’ which will include new icons, softened edges, a new Start menu design, and a more modern style. According to reports, Microsoft is also aiming to revamp the Windows Store to feature a broader selection of apps.
