HP ZBook Fury 17 G7: On-the-Go High-End Workstation Performance

HP ZBook Fury 17 G7

If you look at the HP ZBook Fury 17 G7, you may think it is yet another HP laptop, but you’d be mistaken. This device is probably more potent than your full-tower desktop computer.

The HP ZBook Fury 17 G7, according to Notebookcheck.net, is an outright beast of a laptop: not for gaming, mind you, but for workstation applications. It is easy to see why after looking at the specifications.

A King’s Specs

For instance, the HP ZBook Fury 17 G7 is equipped with an Intel Core i9-10995H mobile processor, a beast of a laptop processor. According to Intel’s Ark, it has eight fast cores with hyperthreading (so you get 16 threads), a base clock of 2.4 GHz, and a crazy boost clock of 5.3 GHz. It also includes 16 MB of Intel’s patented Smart Cache while still retaining a 45 W TDP.

According to TechPowerUp, the GPU is the NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000 Max-Q, a professional-grade graphics card with output that falls somewhere between an RTX 2060 and a Radeon RX 5700. The results may seem to be lacking to others, but keep in mind that this is a workstation card, not a game card like the 2060 or 5700. The 320 tensor cores, which significantly benefit the GPU in machine learning applications, are one thing that indicates explicitly the NVIDIA Quadro card is not for gaming.

Finally, we have 32 GB of fast DDR4 memory and a super-fast 1 TB Western Digital PC SN730 NVMe SSD, which will undoubtedly help speed up the loading times of even the most demanding workstation applications. There are no slow mechanical hard drives here so that you can launch your projects at great speed.

What’s impressive about the machine?

HP now has a range of laptops that can easily compete with Apple’s Macbook Pro series at a lower price since the unveiling of the Zbook line about six years ago. With an Intel Core i9 processor and an NVIDIA Quadro RTX GPU, the HP ZBook Fury 17 G7 is more than capable.

What is impressive about the machine, though, is how much performance HP could cram into a 29% smaller case. The Fury 17 G7 is lighter than previous generations, weighing less than 6.6 pounds, which is also considerably less than its competitors. Though workstation laptops seem to be on the hefty side due to all the robust hardware they have to cool inside a slim shell, 6.6 lbs. is still a lot of weight.

King’s Specs, King’s Price tag

Do you think all this power is required on the go? If that is the case, be prepared to shell out a sizable sum of money. The HP ZBook Fury 17 G7 costs about $5150, though HP’s official store has cheaper versions of the same model (with less powerful specs, of course). However, if you really must have the one with the Intel Core i9 and NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000 Max-Q, you will need a sizable pocket.
